According to mythology, a dreaded dacoit brought home a cow with the intention of slaughtering it and for some reason the cow escaped and the dacoit chased it all around the forest in vain and returned home to find his daughter playing with the cow. She requested him not to slaughter the cow, so the dacoit agreed but unfortunately his daughter passed away during the night. He was so aggrieved that Goddess Bhagavati came to him in his dream and told him that it was she who had come to her as a cow. The dacoit woke up the next morning to find images of Devi and Lord Vishnu in his cowshed and ever since this sanctified place is known as the Chhottanikkara Temple.
